Dom Mark Ephrem Nolan

Dom Mark-Ephrem M. Nolan, OSB was born in Belfast in 1958 and entered the Benedictine Order at the Abbey of Bec (France) in 1979. (Professed in 1981. Ordained priest in 1986). For a decade was in charge of monastic formation, the liturgy and ecumenical outreach at Bec.

In 1998 was chosen by the Abbot General of the Olivetan Benedictine Congregation to lead a group of monks from Bec to establish a monastic foundation in Northern Ireland. The mission statement of Holy Cross Monastery, Rostrevor, speaks of the community having for particular mission to contribute to reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants in a land stained by the blood of Christian brothers and sisters.

Holy Cross Monastery is recognised across the denominational divide as a centre contributing to the spiritual renewal of the Churches in Ireland today.

A Benedictine Perspective - Dom Mark-Ephrem M. Nolan, OSB will speak from his monastic background, rooted in the Benedictine tradition of lectio divina and Christ-centred spirituality.

Title of Presentation :
Will There Be Faith?: So much depends on What, How and Why we Share It

Synopsis of Presentation:
Toward the end of his public ministry, Jesus himself raised the question, “When the Son of Man comes again, will he find faith on earth” (Luke 18: 8). We cannot take the question lightly. The challenge of sharing Christian faith with the rising generations was probably never greater than in this present “post-modern” era. So much depends on what faith we share, how we share it, and to what end. This keynote will make recommendations in response to this challenge.

Title of Presentation: Movies With Meaning

Stories, we all spend our life telling them.. about this..
about that.. about people, but some... some are so good we wish they never end.
...they are so gripping, we would go without sleep to see a little bit more.
some stories bring us laughter, sometimes bring us tears..
but isn't that what a great story does!? makes you feel!?
stories that are so powerful, they really are with us forever......
This presentation will look at how movies tell us these stories.

Title of Presentation: Faith & Food

Synopsis of Presentation:
Sacred meals and religious foods form a key element of catechesis in primary and post-primary schools. The first part of the workshop will provide a brief overview of the key theme of foods, fasting and meal rituals in Religious Education. Foods and meal rituals from Jesus’ life (Sabbath meal, Passover, Eucharist) and the early Christian community (Agape) will be highlighted as central to providing students with an understanding of who Jesus was, how he related to others and how we as Christians respond to the risen Christ today. However teachers cannot assume that students have an understanding or indeed positive experience of meal ritual in their homes and everyday lives. Fast foods, dashboard grazing, TV dinners, all diminish the experience of communal meals and change the nature of meal rituals for so many. Inevitably when this is the case it is difficult for teachers to explore the nature of sacred meals with children.

The second part of the workshop will focus on how teachers can enable children to experience communal sacred meal rituals. It will involve preparing basic recipes for religious meals. The workshop will provide participants with a small booklet of recipes for religious meals in the classroom, guidelines on how to celebrate communal meals with students as well as samples of some of the foods we have previously made in classrooms when exploring this topic of sacred food.
